A stolen laptop is a gut punch — and for a DJ, it is also your studio, your library, and your gig income in one box. The window right after the theft decides how much you can recover. Here is exactly what to do, in order.
Immediately: Account Security First
The laptop is likely to be wiped and resold, and your accounts are the real target. Do this within minutes:
- Change the password on your primary email and every account signed in on the laptop.
- Log out of all sessions where possible — most services (Google, Apple, Microsoft) have a “sign out all devices” option.
- Enable two-factor authentication if you have not already.
This matters more than anything else: a wiped laptop is gone, but a compromised email can drain your bank account, your DJ software licenses, and your client list.
Then: File the Police Report
Report the theft to the police where it happened. You need the report for insurance claims and for any pawn-shop or repair-shop tracking. Give them the serial number (on the original box or receipt) and any distinctive marks — a custom laptop skin makes a laptop genuinely identifiable in a way a bare machine is not.
Use Tracking If You Have It
If you enabled Find My (Mac) or Find My Device (Windows), check it now. Do not confront anyone yourself — share the location with police and let them act. Tracking often recovers the laptop within days, because thieves wipe and resell locally before the trail goes cold.
Secure Your Music Library
Your library is replaceable only if you backed it up. If you did not, check every other copy: external drives, an old laptop, cloud sync folders, and your music pool download history. If you have a backup, the pain is mostly financial. If you do not, this is the moment to start the habit — a library is months of work, and the next laptop deserves a backup plan from day one.
Insurance: Claim What You Can
Check whether the laptop is covered by home or renters insurance, a business policy, or a credit card purchase protection benefit. Claims need the police report, proof of purchase, and often photos. DJ gear is exactly the kind of high-value portable item worth naming on a policy.
Minimize the Damage Long-Term
- Keep serial numbers and receipts in the cloud, not on the laptop.
- Use a laptop lock and never leave the bag unattended — most thefts are opportunity, not planning.
- Keep offline and offsite backups of your library.
- Consider a cheaper “gig laptop” for high-risk events and a main machine at home.
The Mental Part
